Quit smoking magnets

November 15, 2007

A friend recently sent me a quit smoking link. It was a pretty interesting concept and it probably works for many people.

I was very curious though about paying $39.95 for a pair of small magnets.  Why couldn’t you just buy a small pair of magnetic whiteboard magnets for $2.00-$3.00 and accomplish the same goal?

Interesting marketing in this age of quitting smoking, smoking bans in restaurants, public buildings and now some states are considering laws about banning smoking in your car.

Oh well, I’m still smoking and buying my cigarettes on-line trying to save a few dollars. Getting to be a mighty expensive habit with all the taxes being levied by the states.

Maybe $39.95 isn’t so bad afterall but one has to think?

Phillip Morris going after Online Cigarette Importers

October 12, 2007

If you are curently buying your cigarettes from European or Russian importers, it may be short lived.  Even the parent company of world famous Marlboro cigarettes wants to put a stop to it:

Lawsuits Aim to Stop Trademark Lawsuits Aim to Stop Trademark Infringement and Illegal Importation of Cigarettes and Illegal Importation of Cigarettes

Intro:

Philip Morris USA has filed two lawsuits in federal court against Internet site operators engaged in the sale of illegally imported cigarettes bearing Philip Morris USA’s trademarks, including the Marlboro® mark.

“Philip Morris USA will protect our brands and the law-abiding businesses that sell them from unfair competition,” said Charlie Whitaker, vice president, Compliance and Brand Integrity, Philip Morris USA. “We do not want our trademarks misused and do not want our brands associated with illegal activity.”

The lawsuits allege that the websites are selling cigarettes that have been imported in violation of the Imported Cigarette Compliance Act of 2000. In some instances, the defendants have also made false statements about the legality of these sales. The Internet-based cigarette vendors named in this lawsuit fail to comply with applicable tax laws, and the federal Jenkins Act, which requires Internet cigarette retailers to report all sales to the purchaser’s home state taxing authority.

The suits, filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, name as defendants the owners or operators of http://www.paylessmoke.com and http://www.cigmall.net, as well as a number of related websites.

At aadiscountcigarettes, we only sell USA manufactured cigarettes to USA standards.  Our cigarettes are not imported!

Smoking Ban News

Ban on outdoor smoking on Oregon campus is right direction
Extensive bans of this type will continue to occur. Slowly, one by one, outdoor smoking in public places will be outlawed.

Just two years ago Washington state voters made a bold decision to ban indoor smoking just about everywhere. The voter-approved law put an end to smoking in office buildings, restaurants, bars and almost everywhere else people congregate. And no smoking is allowed outdoors within 25-feet of a building’s entrance.

This effort to protect Washingtonians from second-hand smoke was seen as an overreaction by smokers across the nation.

Yet, it wasn’t long before other states were following Washington’s lead. Oregon, too, has adopted Washington’s ban, although it doesn’t go into effect until 2009.

Nevertheless, it’s clear what direction the Northwest is heading.

Last week officials at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland decided that its entire campus – indoors and outdoors – will be tobacco free as of Sept. 17. The new policy will apply to employees, students, visitors, patients and patient family members.

The Associated Press reports that OHSU will offer patients and visitors counseling, nicotine lozenges and other medications to help them manage their nicotine cravings.

So why has OHSU taken this ultra-bold step? Officials say OHSU wants to set the highest standard in maintaining a healthy environment. It also wants to serve as a model for others.

The reasoning is sound.

No, we don’t expect that others will be so wowed by this action that strict bans on smoking will be widespread at universities, hospitals or other expansive campuses around the nation – or even the Northwest.

But bans of this type will occur. Slowly, one by one, outdoor smoking in public places will be outlawed.

Society is moving in that direction, and the shift is occurring far faster than we would have imagined even two years ago.

Where there is no smoke

BILL WOULD REQUIRE SMOKELESS CIGARETTES

Where there is no smoke, there is no fire.

That’s why an Aurora state senator plans to introduce a bill that would require all cigarettes sold in Colorado to be self-extinguishing.

Although they’re called smokeless cigarettes, in reality they are cigarettes that stop burning if smokers stop puffing.

Bob Hagedorn, D-Aurora, wants Colorado to join 22 other states that have passed legislation requiring the sale of such cigarettes to prevent the leading cause of house fire deaths.

“My mom and dad smoked so I know how people easily fall asleep with a cigarette still smoldering,” Hagedorn said Wednesday. “I became intrigued with the technology last summer. It has the tremendous potential of saving lives.”

Phillip Morris USA, one the nation’s largest manufactures of tobacco products, hasn’t actively opposed the passage of such state laws.

Company spokesman, Bill Phelps, said Phillip Morris supports federal legislation that would establish uniform standards requiring the sale of fire-safe cigarettes rather than a patchwork of state laws that may be difficult to implement and enforce.

“This would ensure that all manufactures and importers – regardless of size and location – would be required to satisfy the same standard,” the company says on its Web site.

The National Fire Protection Association is pushing legislation nationwide to require the sale of fire-safe cigarettes.

In 2004, New York became the first state to enact such a law.

Last year alone, 16 states, including Utah, Oregon, California, Illinois, Massachusetts and Kentucky, passed laws requiring the sale of fire-safe cigarettes.

“This is foremost a public safety issue,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of the association. “Cigarettes are the leading cause of house fire deaths in the U.S. They kill on average 700 to 900 people each year.”

Nationwide, nearly half the victims in fatal house fires were sleeping, said Kevin Klein, director of the Colorado Division of Fire Safety. “The technology is there to utilize,” he said. “It decreases the probability of a fire started by a cigarette from occurring.”
