The high cost of smoking

December 26, 2007

There is little doubt that is is becoming ever more costly to be a smoker.  With city and state taxes increasing, the tobacco companies continuing to increase their prices (RJR recently had a $2.00 per carton across the board increase in their premium brands) and more, smoking can now be considered a major monthly budget item for many people, right up there with rent/mortgage, utilities and car payments.

Is there and end in sight?  Hardly. Will prices ever go down?  Not likely!  What are my alternatives besides quitting?  Find less expensive brands or alternative vendors for your purchases.

For instance. Many generic brands flavors are every bit as good as the premium brands but are less costly because there is no advertising or promotion associated with them.  Regional discount brand cigarettes, like Kentucky’s Best, are favored by many in KY (where prices are already lower) because of their lower costs without sacrificing quality flavor.

Then of course, buying your cigarettes on-line versus the local higher priced outlets can save you hundreds if not thousands per year.

Quitting is always an alternative but like many reading this Blog, you enjoy smoking but would just like to make it a little more affordable.

As with many things in life, you always have alternatives to consider.  You can buy your premium brand cigarettes from a local outlet, you can buy your premium brands online and save consideraby, you can try a Discount or Generic brand until you find something to your liking.  Whatever you decide to do, be a smart shopper and take advantage of Kentucky, North Carolina or South Carolina prices without having to travel there to do so.

Buying cigarettes on line is smart shopping and a great way to save money.  Do it today!

Do you mind not smoking?

November 18, 2007

When people used to ask me that in the 70’s and 80’s I actually got a little offended.  I mean, I always sat in the smoking sections of restaurants, planes, airport lounges etc. and felt that I had as much right to smoke as they had a right not to smoke. I used to make a lot of 6-20 hour plane trips all over the world and the thought of going that long without a cigarette was scary.

As the various airlines began to invoke their no-smoking policies, restaurants began banning smoking inside, public buildings yadda yadda, I finally acquiesced that if I am going to be a smoker, I am going to be treated like a second class citizen and forced to go outside, use patches on long flights (or chew lots of nicorette).

Know what?  It is not as inconvenient as I might have imagined 20+ years ago.  It is now just a part of everyday life.  At least I can smoke in the privacy of my home and my home office.  Afterall, there are some kingdoms even lawmakers can’t prevent smokers from using….!

Quit smoking magnets

November 15, 2007

A friend recently sent me a quit smoking link. It was a pretty interesting concept and it probably works for many people.

I was very curious though about paying $39.95 for a pair of small magnets.  Why couldn’t you just buy a small pair of magnetic whiteboard magnets for $2.00-$3.00 and accomplish the same goal?

Interesting marketing in this age of quitting smoking, smoking bans in restaurants, public buildings and now some states are considering laws about banning smoking in your car.

Oh well, I’m still smoking and buying my cigarettes on-line trying to save a few dollars. Getting to be a mighty expensive habit with all the taxes being levied by the states.

Maybe $39.95 isn’t so bad afterall but one has to think?

Phillip Morris going after Online Cigarette Importers

October 12, 2007

If you are curently buying your cigarettes from European or Russian importers, it may be short lived.  Even the parent company of world famous Marlboro cigarettes wants to put a stop to it:

Lawsuits Aim to Stop Trademark Lawsuits Aim to Stop Trademark Infringement and Illegal Importation of Cigarettes and Illegal Importation of Cigarettes

Intro:

Philip Morris USA has filed two lawsuits in federal court against Internet site operators engaged in the sale of illegally imported cigarettes bearing Philip Morris USA’s trademarks, including the Marlboro® mark.

“Philip Morris USA will protect our brands and the law-abiding businesses that sell them from unfair competition,” said Charlie Whitaker, vice president, Compliance and Brand Integrity, Philip Morris USA. “We do not want our trademarks misused and do not want our brands associated with illegal activity.”

The lawsuits allege that the websites are selling cigarettes that have been imported in violation of the Imported Cigarette Compliance Act of 2000. In some instances, the defendants have also made false statements about the legality of these sales. The Internet-based cigarette vendors named in this lawsuit fail to comply with applicable tax laws, and the federal Jenkins Act, which requires Internet cigarette retailers to report all sales to the purchaser’s home state taxing authority.

The suits, filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, name as defendants the owners or operators of http://www.paylessmoke.com and http://www.cigmall.net, as well as a number of related websites.

At aadiscountcigarettes, we only sell USA manufactured cigarettes to USA standards.  Our cigarettes are not imported!

Marlboro Cigarettes-More History

October 8, 2007

Later, during the 50’s, the company decided to dump the targeting of women and began promoting Marlboro as a man’s cigarette. The first icon of this new change in marketing was the ‘Tatooed Man’ depicted on this page. Various images of healthy looking, outdoor types began showing up in ads. The images used in their ads evolved more and more into those depicting particularly macho types. In the beginning, images of naval officers and livestock ranchers made the advertising scene. In 1954, the now well known ‘Marlboro Man’ was introduced, and by 1963 was the sole representative of Marlboro ads. Around 1972, Marlboro cigarettes became the most popular brand, and have remained so, for the most part since then. While the Marlboro brand may not be ranked at the top any longer, it still retains a value in excess of $21 billion. That figure places it above such brands as American Express, Hewlett-Packard, and Gillette. Marlboros naming scheme was in transition in mid-August of 2006, a federal district court ruled that the names ‘Light’, ‘Ultralight’, ‘Natural’, or ‘Mild’ could not be used. The judge said that these names were misleading to smokers in the sense that they conveyed some positive health effect. The ruling further stipulated that names changes must occur at the beginning of 2007. Tentatively, Philip Morris has decided to use a color naming scheme for their products that previously used the banned words in the name of their product. Given that, they have decided that Marlboro Lights would be called Marlboro Golds and that Marlboro Ultralights would be named Marlboro Silvers. We understand that these changes will also affect the Marlboro family of cigarettes sold in our popular online store

Marlboro Cigarettes

September 25, 2007

Marlboro 25’s King Box The amazing Marlboro cigarette brand began in England 1847 and was initially targeted at female smokers. Aiming at this market segment was not successful, so in the 1920’s Marlboro was re-targeted to female smokers in the United States. In this campaign it was stressed that Marlboro was a ‘mild’ cigarette. These efforts continued into World War II when the brand was eventually taken off the market. In the 1950’s Marlboro was again introduced to the market, this time on the heels of a stories about the negative health aspects of smoking. At the time, the vast majority of cigarettes being sold were non-filtered. Marlboro was a filtered cigarette, so this clearly was an attempt to win over the health conscience crowd.

Today, Marlboro is the largest selling brand of cigarettes in the world.  At aadiscount cigarettes, it is our largest selling brand as well.

Whatever Happened to Joe Camel?

September 24, 2007

Camel 99 Light Box The brand’s catch-phrase slogan, used for decades, was “I’d walk a mile for a Camel!”The most famous historical style of Camel cigarettes is the soft pack of the regular, unfiltered variety. Camel regulars achieved the zenith of their popularity through personalities such as news broadcaster Edward R. Murrow, who smoked up to four packs of Camel regulars per day, in effect using a Camel cigarette as his trademark. In late 1987, RJR created Joe Camel as the mascot for the brand. In 1991, the American Medical Association published a report stating that 5- and 6-year olds could more easily recognize Joe Camel than Mickey Mouse, Fred Flintstone, Bugs Bunny or even Barbie.[1] This led the association to ask RJR to terminate the Joe Camel campaign. RJR declined, but further appeals followed in 1993 and 1994. On July 10, 1997, the Joe Camel campaign was retired and replaced with a somewhat more adult campaign which appealed to the desires of twenty-somethings to meet — or be — beautiful and exotic women (desires they nonetheless share with teenagers) in 1930s attire and themes. The camel light is considered to be a discount premium cigarette by many in the industry. While it does not meet the brand awareness of Marlboro and is not considered amongst the cheap cigarettes, it is a very popular seller in the premium cigarettes category. Finding discount premium cigarettes can be trying for many but at aadiscount cigarettes we always strive to bring you the freshest discount premium cigarettes in the market. If you are just looking for cheap smokes, you may wish to try our generic cigarettes section of our site. There you will find generic cigarettes, marlboro cigarettes, discount premium cigarettes and many other brands. Marlboro cigarettes are our biggest sellers.

Cigarettes made in Europe and Russia

September 23, 2007

Many of the online cigarette web sites operate out of Western Europe and Russia.  While this is not illegal, the products they sell and how they ship to you will be very different from Aadiscount cigarettes.

The cigarettes sold in Europe and the Russian communities have a distinctly different tastes than their American counterparts.  They are the same brand names and packaging, in most cases, is also very similar but the flavors can be very different.  The Europeans and Russians like a stronger taste in their tobacco so if you buy their products, you may notice a very different flavor.  That may not be bad and this is not meant to say you won’t like them but just be prepared for a differnt flavor than what you are used to in America.  At aadiscount cigarettes, we only sell Americn cigarettes, made in the the USA and shipped to you fresh daily (usually within 2-7 days of your purchase).

Shipping and delivery is also very different.  Your orders from Europen seller may take anywhere from 7-30 days to arrive and in many cases, will not arrive in full carton shipments. Why?

This is kind of a two edged sword that has some funny underpinnings to it.  According to Customs and the ATF, a person returning from a foreign country is allowed up to 200 cigarettes duty free.

I. The rules governing the importation of cigarettes and tobacco productsunder 26 U.S.C 5754. Restrictions on Importation of Previously ExportedTobacco Products and Other Conforming Amendments:A. Export-labeled tobacco products:B. Personal-use quantity exemption:(1) Passengers/travelers may import previously exported (restricted)tobacco products only in quantities not exceeding the amountsspecified in exemptions for which the traveler qualifies. Anyquantities of restricted tobacco products not permitted by anexemption will be seized and destroyed. These items are typicallypurchased in Duty Free Stores, on carriers operatinginternationally, or in foreign stores. These items are usuallymarked “Tax Exempt. For Use Outside the U.S.,” or “U.S. TaxExempt For Use Outside the U.S.”For example, a returning resident, if she/he claims and is grantedan exemption, is eligible for the $400 exemption, which may include200 cigarettes. If the resident declares 400 previously exportedcigarettes, the resident would be permitted 200 cigarettes, tax-freeunder the exemption and the remaining 200 cigarettes would beseized. If a returning resident is eligible for the $400 exemptionand declares 400 cigarettes, of which 200 have been previouslyexported and 200 which have not been previously exported, theresident would be permitted to import the 200 previously exportedcigarettes tax free under the exemption and the resident would becharged duty and tax on the remaining 200 cigarettes.

There are also some pretty strict labeling requirements and other things that a foreign cigarette manufacturer must adhere to in order to import cigarettes into the US (for re-sale).

The part about shipping cigarettes to the US has the States Attorney Generals offices up in arms.  They want the US Postal Service to begin confiscating shipments of tobacco products from foerign countries whereas the Postmaster General is refusing to do so because it is not part of their charter.

Because of this impending threat to their business, many foreign shippers will send your cigarettes in smaller, less obvious packages (than a carton size package) and you may receive your cigarettes over a period of time 2-5 packs at a time.  Now, if your order takes 2-4 weeks to ship and they are coming in 2-5 packs at a time, how fresh can they be?  Also, what a pain to receive them 2-5 packs per delivery.  Think about it if you are ordring 4-5 cartons at a time?

Oh well, just some interesting tidbits of information about ordeing cigarettes online from foreign sellers

Smoking Ban News

September 20, 2007

Ban on outdoor smoking on Oregon campus is right direction
Extensive bans of this type will continue to occur. Slowly, one by one, outdoor smoking in public places will be outlawed.

Just two years ago Washington state voters made a bold decision to ban indoor smoking just about everywhere. The voter-approved law put an end to smoking in office buildings, restaurants, bars and almost everywhere else people congregate. And no smoking is allowed outdoors within 25-feet of a building’s entrance.

This effort to protect Washingtonians from second-hand smoke was seen as an overreaction by smokers across the nation.

Yet, it wasn’t long before other states were following Washington’s lead. Oregon, too, has adopted Washington’s ban, although it doesn’t go into effect until 2009.

Nevertheless, it’s clear what direction the Northwest is heading.

Last week officials at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland decided that its entire campus – indoors and outdoors – will be tobacco free as of Sept. 17. The new policy will apply to employees, students, visitors, patients and patient family members.

The Associated Press reports that OHSU will offer patients and visitors counseling, nicotine lozenges and other medications to help them manage their nicotine cravings.

So why has OHSU taken this ultra-bold step? Officials say OHSU wants to set the highest standard in maintaining a healthy environment. It also wants to serve as a model for others.

<!– document.write(”); aCampaigns = new Array(); aCampaigns[759] = 100; aAds = new Array(); nAdsysTime = new Date().getTime()/1000; if ((nAdsysTime >= 1174885200) && (nAdsysTime = 1174885200) && (nAdsysTime = 1174885200) && (nAdsysTime = 1179118800) && (nAdsysTime *

The reasoning is sound.

No, we don’t expect that others will be so wowed by this action that strict bans on smoking will be widespread at universities, hospitals or other expansive campuses around the nation – or even the Northwest.

But bans of this type will occur. Slowly, one by one, outdoor smoking in public places will be outlawed.

Society is moving in that direction, and the shift is occurring far faster than we would have imagined even two years ago.
